A strong handshake. Honesty. Doing things right the first time. Taking care of your neighbors, working hard, keeping your word. That is how Tennessee exterminators, Sherrill Pest Control, does business. It was a different time in the 1950’s. That was the time that Horace Sherrill started helping families protect their homes from insects, ants and creepy crawlys. Almost 10 years later, Horace moved the pest control operation to middle Tennessee and his 4 sons joined in. After running the business and building a great reputation for decades he sold the middle Tennessee interest to his oldest son Vernon “Jr.” Sherrill in 1975. Shortly after that, in a parking lot of a customer’s home, Vernon. scratched out a logo on a napkin and “Sherrill Pest Control” was officially born.
Vernon, who is an avid believer in giving back to the community that has served him and his family so well, knew he would have to dig in and build a business that could expand if he wanted to meet his personal and professional goals. He researched and implemented best practices, educated himself and others, developed mentors and became a mentor to others… He took his father’s solid foundation and built something special… a company with integrity, passion, growth for the employees, ever evolving services for customers – and he did all of this and kept the heart and soul of the foundation alive.
This hard work has been noticed by the community and even his vendors; recently – Dow Chemical, who makes Sentricon Termite Elimination System recognized Sherrill Pest as one of the top 10 out of 800 pest control companies for customer retention in the country (picture). Vernon was just recognized by the Manchester Chamber of Commerce by his contribution to the community and continues to innovate.
A few years ago, another Sherrill became an important figure in Sherrill Pest’s continued growth. Vernon’s son Kevin is walking closely in his father’s footsteps and taking over operations. Like his father he has ambitious goals of growth and taking Sherrill Pest to another plateau.
If you ask him why the business integrity is so important he will say “we live right here in middle Tennessee. We are locally owned and we work with and for our neighbors. Customer service is critical to the success of small businesses and that’s why we stand behind our work and guarantees. When we survey our customers, the number one thing they tell us is that our employees are knowledgeable, trustworthy. The other comment we receive the most is that our customers are “comfortable with Sherrill Pest Control being in their homes.”
This trust factor is big for Sherrill Pest. They have gone through great lengths to become a Quality Pro Certified company. This is not necessary for pest control / service based organizations but was important to Kevin. To achieve the “Quality Pro” Certification they do extensive background checks, drug screens, and an in-depth interview process. The average employee has been with Sherrill Pest over 8 years.
When asked what he’s most proud of, Kevin said “We have the best interests of our customers at heart. We want to make sure every customer is treated right, and that we leave them smiling and wow them. Our ambitious goal is constant quality improvement – we’ll do whatever it takes to keep our customers happy.
With three generations of character, work ethic, and a growing ambition, the future looks bright for Sherrill Pest Control!
Vernon Sherrill, his wife Cindy, and their son Kevin, have all served as President of the local Pest Control Association. Additionally, all have been on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Pest Control Association. Vernon and Cindy have also served on the Executive Board of the Tennessee Pest Control Association.
