Fire Ants

Fire Ants are HERE!

Middle Tennesseans are finding out that these pests are showing up in locations that pose a serious risk to their family’s safety at home, work, school, sporting events, etc.

Should I Be Concerned?

Although fire ants can build their mounds in many types of soil, they prefer open, sunny areas such as lawns, parks, pastures and cultivated fields. They can also construct mounds in rotting logs, around stumps and trees and in or under buildings. Fire Ant mounds can be from a few inches in height to over 18 inches, depending on the location and the soil type. Regardless of the size mound visible above ground, use caution because they are very aggressive and will sting repeatedly when their mound is disturbed.

Their stings commonly result in reactions such as burning, itching areas that form white pustules in 24-28 hours. Severe reactions can lead to severe chest pains, nausea, severe sweating, loss of breath, serious swelling and slurred speech or even death in rare cases. If severe reactions are present, call 911 or go to an emergency room immediately.
